Nafplio: Where to Stay for the Best Experience

Nafplio is one of Greece's most romantic towns. From Venetian mansions in the old town to sea-view guesthouses, here is where to stay to make the most of your visit.

Nafplio is widely regarded as the most beautiful town in the Peloponnese — and for many visitors, the most beautiful in all of mainland Greece. Narrow cobbled streets, Venetian mansions, the fortress of Palamidi looming overhead, and the small castle of Bourtzi sitting quietly in the bay: this is a town that earns its reputation the moment you arrive. Choosing where to stay here matters more than in most places — Nafplio is small enough to explore entirely on foot, and your base shapes the whole experience.

The Old Town: The Most Rewarding Choice

Staying in Nafplio's old town — the Palaia Poli — is the most atmospheric option by some distance. Hotels and guesthouses here are typically housed in restored Venetian or Ottoman buildings, with high ceilings, stone walls, internal courtyards and interiors that feel genuinely historic without being uncomfortable.

Restaurants, cafés, and the town's main sights are all within easy walking distance. In the evenings, when the lanes fill with locals and the tavernas spill onto the cobblestones, the old town is simply one of the finest places to be in Greece.

What to Expect

Accommodation in the old town tends to be boutique in scale — small properties, personal service, often family-run. Large hotel chains don't really exist here. Prices are generally higher than on the outskirts, but the setting justifies the premium.

One practical note: most streets in the old town are pedestrianised or traffic-restricted. If you're arriving by car, parking is available at the edges of the historic centre — worth factoring in when you book.

Sea Views and the Bourtzi

Some of Nafplio's most sought-after rooms look directly over the Argolic Gulf or towards the Bourtzi castle. Waking up to that view — still water, the small Venetian fort in the middle distance, fishing boats in the harbour — is one of those travel memories that stays with you.

These properties are concentrated along the seafront promenade and the streets immediately behind it. They fill quickly in summer: booking well ahead is not optional if this is what you're after.

Pronoia: Quieter and More Affordable

For a calmer, generally more budget-friendly base, the neighbourhood of Pronoia sits just outside the historic centre — roughly ten to fifteen minutes on foot from the old town. It offers a solid range of modern hotels, apartments and guesthouses, and is a practical choice for families or anyone travelling by car who would rather not navigate narrow medieval streets.

The trade-off is atmosphere: Pronoia is pleasant but it doesn't have the old town's character.

Near Arvanitia Beach

A short walk from the old town, the small beach of Arvanitia is one of Nafplio's most enjoyable spots. A handful of properties in the area put you within a few minutes of swimming while keeping the centre easily accessible — a good option for those who want both culture and a place to cool off.

How Long to Stay

Nafplio works well as a short stay — one or two nights as a base for visiting the Theatre of Epidaurus and the ruins of Mycenae — but it also rewards those who linger. The town has a rhythm that reveals itself slowly: morning coffee in the square, an afternoon swim, a long dinner at a harbour taverna. The quality of your accommodation affects how much of that you actually enjoy.

When to Book

Summer — June to August — is the busiest season. Spring and autumn weekends draw large numbers of visitors from Athens, less than two hours away by road. Old town availability disappears fast during these periods.

April to May and September to October offer the best conditions overall: comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds, and noticeably better value.

One Final Thought

Whatever your budget, try to stay inside or on the edges of the old town if you can. The real pleasure of Nafplio is being there early in the morning before the day visitors arrive, or late at night when the town belongs to itself again. Staying in the middle of it — not outside looking in — is what makes the difference.
